Plot

The film revolves around four main characters living in Forest Gate, London.[1] Over the course of a few days, there are six inter-linking short stories which are each represented by a different rap song.[2]

Cast

Production

The script for iLL Manors was partly based on actual events such as Drew's home being raided by armed police[3] and a girl prostituting herself to repay a drug dealer.[4] The film had been in development for three years prior to filming,[4] however Drew struggled to secure finance for his film.[5] Prior to writing the script for iLL Manors, when Drew was 21 years old he had originally tried to begin production on another script he had written called Trigger, but he was refused funding as he was an inexperienced director. [6] In 2008, Drew directed his own short film Michelle starring Anouska Mond, Adam Deacon and Ed Skrein. The short film was released online and acted as a pilot for iLL Manors.[7] Drew also directed the music video for "Pieces", his collaboration with Chase & Status, and also played Dabs in Noel Clarke's film Adulthood (2008). iLL Manors was greenlit for production in 2009[7] as part of the Film London Microwave scheme[8] with half of the film's budget being self-financed by Drew with a £50,000 loan.[5]

Casting for the film took place during August 2010[9] and several of the cast members hired were young unknown actors from the East End of London.[3] Principal photography began on 1 September 2010 at 3 MiLLs Studios, London[10] and filming lasted for four weeks in London, England.[11] During production of the film, it was reported that the cast and crew ran into trouble with youths in Forest Gate, London.[5] Editing of the film began in December 2010, however post-production of the film was delayed due to Plan B performing on The Defamation of Strickland Banks Tour during 2010 and 2011.[12] In order to complete post-production of the film,[13] the distribution rights to iLL Manors were sold to Revolver Entertainment in April 2011[14] and Plan B had to delay the release date of his third studio album The Ballad of Belmarsh.[13]

Soundtrack

iLL Manors has been described as a "hip hop musical" and all songs will be performed by Plan B.[2]
